Celebrity Style of the Week: Rachel Bilson

I’ve decided to start a new weekly section for my blog. This week goes to one of my absolute favorite fashion icons, Rachel Bilson. I love the way she has asserted herself in the world leaving behind teen stardom in The O.C. to establish her own fashion line and completely owning independence and personal style.

Her style is often referred to as “boho” though this look is a little more chic. Her outfits are often characterized by a perfectly polished, but effortless street style, and this is no exception. She pulls together several fall essentials to create a look anyone could put together with pieces in their closet. The two-toned leopard scarf emboldens the classic jacket and works perfectly with the olive green tank.

My favorite part about her outfit is the grey ankle booties with cuffed boyfriend jeans. Pairing heels or booties with jeans for a daytime look is a fabulous way to get more use out of adorable shoes that are too often sequestered for dressier occasions. By showing off her black tights underneath her jeans, Bilson’s vintage look is still very distinguishable.

Fashion Week Designers Reveal Spring Trends

A review of New York Fashion Week for all the Fayetteville celebrities/socialites/journalists who weren’t invited to the event.

Number one on my life bucket list: go to New York Fashion Week and sit in the front row.

This glamorous, invitation-only event takes place twice a year, and is populated only by the wealthiest and most well known names in fashion and Hollywood. Though I’m not sure where exactly I will fit in when my time comes to sit on the front row of Oscar De La Renta’s premiere runway show, I will keep dreaming.

Designers presented their clothing lines for the Spring/Summer 2011 season last week at the Lincoln Center in New York City, kicking off the fashion season followed by shows in London, Milan and Paris.

White Hot Runways

Head-to-toe white will be the classic neutral next season for both men and women. The diversity of the designs complements the assortment of the designers who showcased this timeless trend. Pants and top ensembles, long and short dresses, flowing and tight-fitted, cotton and chiffon were among the all-white attire from designers Victoria Beckham, Lacoste, Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez, BCBG Max Azria and Calvin Klein, to name a few.

As a girl who never wants to hang up her white pants after Labor Day, I love this crisp, spring look. It is so traditional that you can mix old pieces with new, creating your own fashion persona, yet still adhering to the fashion industry’s wishes of white.

Mix It Up

DKNY

According to the experts it’s all about the mix-up in prints next season, specifically with florals. Designers Thakoon and Peter Som both revealed their unique floral designs with contrasting colors and patterns, while Proenza Schouler mixed florals with bold stripes, polka dots or star prints. DKNY truly took the mixing bull by the horns and threw sequins, strips and blossoms into one ensemble.

I’ve never been able to really support this trend, despite Rachel Bilson and Taylor Swift, two of my Hollywood faves, fully embracing the outfit mish mash. Perhaps I over think it too much, rather than just putting two prints together and going for the bold. However, I do applaud those who can pull it off, and if you’re daring, go for the fashion risk and keep your head held high despite the inevitable looks you will receive.

New Animal Print Snakes to the Top

Christian Siriano

Leopard print will finally have to cede its throne to the python print this spring. Multiple designers had snakeskin dresses on the runway including Thakoon’s sexy, shirt-dress, Z-Spoke’s purple, python dress and skirts by Joseph Altuzarra. Christian Siriano, winner of “Project Runway” in 2008, unveiled show stopping animal prints following his white ensembles- a red dress embossed with snakeskin and a bold turquoise, crocodile blouse.

As a professed lover of animal prints, my transition from fall’s leopard trend to spring’s snakeskin might be trickier than I’d thought. Not confident enough to pull off a snakeskin dress or skirt (or quite possibly a little freaked out by the thought of wearing snakeskin), this trend might be better suited for accessories. An exotic clutch or skinny belt would be the perfect accessory to accentuate my all white attire.

Ooh La La, Leopard

I have always been a fan of leopard print, really animal print in general. I currently own fabulous Sam Edelman leopard print sandals that I basically wear as a neutral, suitable with everything. So it delighted me when I saw leopard as a hot trend for fall in nearly every aspect of attire from head to toe (not all at the same time of course).

From top to bottom Gisele Bundchen flawlessly models Roberto Cavalli’s fall/winter line. Though the only person who could pull off this entire outfit on the streets would be Gisele, it displays the diversity of the trend modeling leopard fur on the jacket, bold leggings and a stylish bag.

Rihanna posing for Elle radiates with the sultry, sexiness of wearing leopard and unveils the trend of wearing it as a hat, bandana or headband.

My favorite new leopard trend is the scarf or shawl. The girl on the streets builds upon the classic fall look with the perfect amount of leopard to spice up an outfit and turn some heads.

For the Love of Shoes

There are two types of shoes that I am most looking forward to wearing for fall. One of which I have already purchased, but have yet to wear, and the second of which I am still searching for that perfect pair. Behold the beloved peep-toe bootie and the over-the-knee boot.

The second I saw these shoes in Dillards at the end of summer, I absolutely had to have them. Though they may appear alien to some, these shoes have been flying off the shelf, and for good reason. Notice Katie Holmes’ casual attire courtside at the Lakers game pairing these Vince Camuto shoes with boyfriend jeans. (Yes, when I saw this picture after I bought the shoes I really felt like a celebrity) These shoes can function with literally almost any outfit, whether it be jeans or professional attire and they are sure to catch an eye.

I have always been a fan of boots, and the variety of shapes and colors in the fall trend of over-the-knee boots makes me giggle with excitement. I love Hilary’s black ensemble and how easily the boots pull it all together. However, the tan ones above coupled with the yellow leg warmers and the clean white outfit make for such a perfect, crisp fall look. Guaranteed there is an over-the-knee boot out there for every fashion persona.

Fashion, Part Deux

Leather, leather everywhere. When I first noticed this trend I thought it was slutty (as it can very well still be), but I’ve come to realize one can pull it off and look sexy and sleek like Kim Kardashian and trendy like the woman above from 5 Inch and Up blog. Leather is all around this year and one key piece can completely turn around an outfit. Whether it be a jacket, short shorts, or pencil skirt, leather is here for fall.

Fall Fashion Must-Haves

Fall is quietly approaching and the urge to run out and spend all of my money on the appropriate attire has taken hold of me and won’t let go.

In the few spare moments I have throughout my day, or when I need to de-stress from the chaotic life I choose to lead, I’ve taken to perusing the fall fashion must-haves in the blogosphere.

I’ve compiled a list of wonderful fall essentials that I believe every leading lady must have to complete her wardrobe in time for the chic evenings out and the comfortable, but stylish days in.

Though I had hoped to create a fabulous graphic displaying all of the trends I’ve found, I’ve decided that my limited free time should be spent elsewhere and thus, I will simply post a picture or two each day of some of my favorite things. Enjoy and let me know what you’re excited about wearing this fall!

Though I first heard of greige just a few weeks ago, upon further study it apparently was the hot color for spring and summer, thanks to Lily Allen. However, I’ve taken the liberty of declaring it the color of fall, since I wasn’t aware of the trend and love it too much to let it pass. As a huge proponent of wearing your attitude on your nails, this blend of grey and beige is the perfect mix of elegance and edginess for fall.

My newest fashion obsession is fedora hats. They go in and out of style a lot, and I’ve never liked them before, but now I want one so bad. The problem is I’m not sure if I can pull it off and I can’t find the one that is just perfect. I’m going on vacation to Orlando in a week. That’s my timeline to find one. Let me know if you have any leads for me.

I love that you can dress it up or dress it down, wear it on the beach or the street and I LOVE that even Zac is in on the trend. But Miley.. I just don’t know about that leopard.

Romping around in my romper

Romper:

1. A person or thing that romps. (Romp: to play or frolic in a lively or boisterous manner)

2. A loosely fitted, one-piece garment having short bloomers that is worn especially by small children for play.

3. A chair old people run over your toes with in Walmart.

Here’s the deal. When I first started seeing rompers in magazines and in stores, I didn’t like them… at all. Adults are supposed to wear onesizes?! (According to dictionary.com they aren’t for adults!) I thought they were weird and I would never get into the trend. Then came the day when my mom bought me one and insisted I wear it. My roommate had been wanting one for weeks and was so jealous I, of all the people who didn’t even like them, got one before her. So I decided to get in on the trend and try mine out for a girls night out with my new sparkly, gold nail polish. Yes, I finally got some.

This is how I felt, like I was on the runway! If you know me at all you know I love celebrities and I kind of felt like one wearing my romper. Thus, the official verdict was that I liked it a lot. I don’t know if I could get into printed ones though, basic black works pretty well for me. The one problem I did have with it was how difficult it made going to the restroom, sorry, but it’s true. Anyway, there’s my evaluation of rompers. Enjoy a few pictures with friends from the evening.

These are a few of my favorite things…

1. Animal bracelet things

I have never seen these things in real life, but for some reason I want them so bad. Just wait until I get them and then I will post a picture of myself looking just like this little girl.

2. Sparkly gold nail polish

I saw this on cupcakesandcashmere.com and have been searching for similar gold nail polish ever since. I love painting my nails unique colors: teal, purple, orange and the latest has been metallic silver (which my mom despises at each new application). I read in Glamour that metallic shades are hot for summer: silver for fair skinned, gold for medium skinned and copper for dark skinned. “Though it’s cool to wear the ‘wrong’ hues too!” Glamour told me. Good thing, because I’ve been wearing the wrong hue for weeks! But not for long….

3. Sactionals

What is a sactional you say? I thought it was the weirdest thing ever when someone told me about it today, and now I think it’s the greatest thing ever. It’s a couch, in sections, that you can move around into all of these wonderful positions. And yes, it comes in zebra and leopard print. What more could I ask for?! Check out lovesac.com.

4. Mexican food

Yes, this has always been a love of mine, but today I was particularly craving it. So I went to the new Mexican restaurant off of Dickson with two wonderful people J and S for some chips, cheese dip and chicken fajitas made to perfection.

5. Wii video game- Just Dance

Immediately after K showed me the commercial for this game I knew I had to buy it and it would be a hit. Boy was I ever right.  After dancing off the Mexican food for 2 hours with S, I was soaked in sweat and exhausted, ready for the game to be my workout routine every day. It was definitely the most fun I have ever had in a game, and I am not a gamer. (I recorded a video of me and S doing it and it’s pretty hilarious, but I’m having technical difficulties. I’ll post it later, because it’s definitely not something you want to miss.)

6. Random Tie-dye parties

J came home from Walmart with a handful of suspicious ingredients that we were unsure of until we learned it was a tie-dye kit. The activity was perfect for dance breaks and so much fun. I’ll post pictures of the results later.

7. S&P

I LOVE these adorable salt and pepper shakers S got us from Costa Rica, yay!

Today was a rather uneventful day- besides having a flat tire for the second time this month and hearing it could possibly be someone slashing my tires. “Did you make someone mad by telling him you wouldn’t go on a date with him?” The tattooed mechanic asked with a wink. Thus, I would rather share some outfits from my favorite blog cupcakesandcashmere.com and break up the monotony of words and life.

She’s just bein’ Miley

As we all know, I used to.. yes, used to… be obsessed with Miley Cyrus. I thought it was the greatest thing ever that so many people thought I looked like her and I just really wanted to be friends with her, but recently things have changed. She has become too scandalous, raunchy and very bluntly, skanky. It is a sad day in my book to move her down the friend list, but it had to be done.

However, while shopping today I found some cutoff black jean shorts that I loved, but very much made me think of Miley- who is now famous for her booty shorts. (She’s seventeeeeeeen!!) Now I promise my shorts are not nearly as skanky as these, but she would in fact wear them I believe. Which leads me to think I will always hold a special place in my heart for Miley, and definitely Hannah Montana (which if you don’t know the difference between the two, please contact me. Or watch Disney).
