Friday + a few of my favorite things
I wanted to share with my lovely readers a few of the little things in my life right now that are making it just that much sweeter.
Vitatops — A BIG shoutout to Hungry Girl for this find and my next one. (If you don’t know who HG is, check her out.) These are 100 calorie muffin tops that are absolutely delicious! They come in tons of flavors including Deep Chocolate, Banana Nut and Pumpkin Spice. You could only order them online at vitalicious.com for a long time, but just recently they’ve come to Target and I’m so excited! You can find them in the freezer section.
Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk — Okay, I know this sounds weird, but hear me out. I kept seeing HG rave about this in emails and I was very suspicious until one day I was out of milk and my spontaneous shopper alter ego showed up. I. will. never. go. back. to. milk. I don’t drink milk, so I rarely use it, but this stuff adds a little vanilla sweetness to cereal and coffee. How does that not sound good? And it’s healthy! All natural, 50% more Calcium than milk and only 40 calories a cup. OH and it lasts way longer than milk! I’m a huge fan, if you can’t tell.
Phytoclear moisturizer — I got this moisturizer in Dallas and I don’t know how I’m ever going to use anything else. It’s literally one of those “keep for life” products. The moisturizer is lightweight and sinks right into your skin so you don’t have to wait a while before putting on your make up. It even smells great!
Spray Tans — This has been my latest addiction (yes, it is definitely an addiction and no, I do NOT look like Snooki.) I was very skeptical of spray tans at first, but it was almost spring and all I wanted was to be tan. So to keep me out of the tanning bed I decided to try a spray tan. To be safe I went to a spa and had it done by a professional spray tanner, rather than a machine at a tanning bed place. Though it’s kind of pricey, it looks wonderful and you don’t have to risk your health tanning!
Essie, 5th Avenue — I know I blogged about coral nail polish as a spring must-have, but now that I’ve actually worn it I’m way more on board. I’ve always been a dark or neutral colored nail polish gal, but this is busting me out of my rut. It took me a few days to get use to, but now I absolutely love the burst of color! I always recommend Essie nail polish, and this color is a great coral.
Editor’s Note: I apologize for the salesperson who wrote this blog. I have not been endorsed by any company. These are my real feelings about these products.
Wednesday was:
A disheartening wake-up call (My dog of 15 years died)
Much-needed cry + lay in bed time
Strengthening my salesperson/pushiness skills
Sweating, on street corners
Feeling the love of friends
Bubble bath + Bon Iver + Vogue + Red wine
Hump day — a reminder that tomorrow will be a brighter day
Spring Fashion Must-Haves
With the beautiful weather we’ve been having all I can think about is spring fashion. These are a few of the things currently on my wish list.
{I love white pants, and this white suit is stunning for the spring}
{I found this image and couldn’t resist. Yes, men can pull off white jeans and this is exactly how. Absolutely ADORE this look}
{I’ve been wanting a biker jacket all winter and never got one. This is a beautifully updated version for spring from J. Crew}
{As is this one from Rag & Bone, except, minus the pants. Don’t you just love the zebra detailed lining?}
{I’ve never been a huge fan of maxi dresses, but this one from Cavalli is fabulous. I’m hoping to find one similar for my Aruba honeymoon!}
{Nail polish of the season? Coral. Thank you Tay for demonstrating it so elegantly}
{Must have shoes: neutral wedges. These from Aldo will go with anything and everything}
{As much as I try, I’m not one for wearing bright colors. Thus, for spring it’s time for bold accessories like this eccentric Balenciaga watch}
Happy Friday
It’s been a long, cold, rainy, depressing week.
And then came along Friday (I’m refraining from singing the song here, you’re welcome.) The sun’s out, the windows are rolled down and everyone remembers what spring feels like again.
For some of us, though the beautiful day beckons there is still so much work to be done and we’ll hold out until summer to really feel the warm release.
So for those of you stuck inside today, here’s some video entertainment. Hope you enjoy.
{Watch the whole thing, or at least get about halfway through to the rap part. Trust me, it’s worth it.}
Taylor Swift ft. T-Pain – Thug Story from Antoine Pham on Vimeo.
{Hopefully you’ve all seen this, but if you haven’t, it’s probably the No. 1 reason why Taylor Swift is my all-time favorite.}
{We saw Donald Glover, on the right, on campus last night and his stand-up was hilarious. He also did some of his rapping for us, which was awesome. To hear his raps, check out my story on the UATrav website.}
Also, check out my new quote of the week on the top right of the home page.
XOXO
Note to Self
I reached a breaking point today.
I realized how much work I have ahead of me in the last month of school. I realized I’m almost done with school forever. No more summer breaks. No more month-long Christmas breaks. No more spring breaks. I’ll be in the real world with a real job. And then there’s just that, a job, which I don’t have. Terrifying.
I think I’m making myself physically sick.
So instead of more rambling about my stress that will only make me more stressed, I wanted to stop and focus on the wonderful things in my life right now, because somehow I keep forgetting about them. Even though I’m pretty sure I’ve blogged this exact same post before, I need reassurance and reminders over and over and over and this is my way to de-stress. And again as much as I want you to read this and get something out of it, this blog is really for me.

What I’m thankful for right now…
I have a roof over my head, food to eat and clean water to drink.
and if I didn’t have those things, I would have plenty of people to provide them for me.
I have people in my life who really care about me. I have someone I can call or text or drop by to see at any time — to complain to, to share good news with, to cry with, to laugh with, to simply be with.
As much as I forget it, not everyone has that.
I’m getting married in less than 70 days.
Though the rest of my future is uncertain, that’s the one thing I know I have, and goodness, that makes things so much easier.
I’m healthy.
Yes, I get headaches more often than I wish. And some days I feel nauseous or my stomach hurts or my feet hurt, but I don’t have to live with a disease that affects my life. I can do anything I want without even thinking about it.
I’m blessed financially.
I’m not living from one paycheck to another. I’m not worrying about how I’m going to feed myself. I’m not worrying about the bills getting paid on time.
*
The most important thing to remember about being blessed with all these things is how I use them.
Do I give back financially like I could? Do I complain too much about my aches and pains? Do I show how thankful I am to the people around me and tell them how much they mean to me? Do I groan at having to drink tap water when some people have no water?
Looking at everything I have and everyone I have in my life, my life seems almost perfect. Why complain about a silly old thesis when the death toll is rising in Japan and people can’t find their families or have nowhere to go with no food to eat?
Yes, we all know this already. But another reminder can never hurt.
“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” -Luke 12:48
A Word a Day Keeps the Teacher at Bay
It seems the past week or so my vocabulary has been expanding. I love learning new words, but only seem to remember them if I learn them some way other than mindless memory from a dictionary. I’ve tried several times to memorize Dictionary.com’s Word of the Day and it just doesn’t work out.
So, here are my new words to share with you, and hopefully you’ll remember them.

Trousseau (troo so): a woman’s possessions such as clothing, lingerie and linens that accompany her into marriage. The origin of Trousseau is taken from the French trousse, meaning a small bundle.
Threading: An ancient method of hair removal using cotton thread rolled over hairlines, plucking the hair at the follicle level. Unlike tweezing where a single hair is pulled out each time, threading can remove an entire row of hair, resulting in a straighter line. It is popular in Arabic culture, as well as Indian and Persian culture.
Bracketology: the process of predicting the field of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, named as such because it is commonly used to fill in tournament brackets for the postseason. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi is the inventor of the term “bracketology”, starting first as the owner and editor of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook and ending up as the resident bracketologist on ESPN.
Onus: used to refer to something that is one’s duty or responsibility; a burden; an obligation
Biophilia: innate, instinctive love of nature.
Life on Wisteria Lane
I’ve never been one to feel like I have to explain my decisions publicly, and despite what it looks like that’s not what this post is about.
Everyone has a way to relax after a long day, whether it be reading, watching movies, playing video games, etc. and ever since I’ve gotten Netflix mine has been watching tv shows by the season and my latest obsession is one that has gotten a lot of groans — Desperate Housewives.
Though on the surface DH is about neighborhood gossip and drama, I’ve actually learned quite a lot from this show. I spoke to this idea that tv can teach us things in my post about my Christmas break obsession Veronica Mars.
So, to all you Desperate Housewives naysayers out there, this post is for you.
1. It is very important to have a group of girlfriends you can trust.
2. You never know what happens behind closed doors.
3. If you want to test your marriage, open a restaurant.
4. Children need spankings.
5. Everyone has a secret they are willing to protect in some way or another.
6. A smile does not mean a person is happy.
7. If a husband and wife are committed to one another, there is never a fight they can’t overcome.
8. Always introduce yourself to your neighbors, baked goods in hand.
9. Stick by your significant other even if he or she is in a coma.
10. You never know what someone could be hiding in a basement.
11. Truly decide what it is that you want in life before you go after all of the wrong things.
12. Forgive and forget. Don’t let something major happens before you realize who is important in your life.
13. Always be bold and stick up for what you believe in. No matter what anyone else says.
14. Nobody’s perfect.
15. A plumber is never just a plumber and a pharmacist is never just a pharmacist.
Editor’s Note: I am only finished with the third season. No spoilers please.
Audrey Hepburn’s Beauty Tips
This is a poem Audrey Hepburn wrote when asked about her beauty tips. It was read years later at her funeral.
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.
*
Thank you mom for sharing this poem with me, but I already knew all of these tips because you have taught them to me over the years. You are the most beautiful person I know inside and out and inspire me to live this way, remembering that beauty comes from within.

Oh March, How I Love Thee
I hope everyone is enjoying this BEAUTIFUL warm weather.
Everyone is happier than normal.
Everyone is skipping class more than normal.
Everyone seems to think that’s okay.
Everything is more fun, i.e. a lunch date on the patio.
Everything seems easier, namely running, procrastinating and eating healthy.
Everyone finds something exciting to look forward to.
Everyone is talking about Spring Break.
Everyone smiles.

Spring [Fashion] is in the Air
As a tribute to March and a prayer for warm weather (and no more snow, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc.) I’ve decided to start my spring fashion list of hot trends and must-haves. And what better way to begin than by my favorite Oscar 2011 fashion look, Mila Kunis.
This look exemplifies everything I want for spring: sexy, lacy, bold, confident, unique.
To be honest I wasn’t sure what I thought about this dress at first glance, and then it just hit me. I think it’s reminiscent of love at first sight — I was unaware of it at first, because I’m not sure if I believe in that sentiment, and then I just realized, this is the one.
For those of you non-fashion lovers out there this probably sounds very cheesy, but for those of you like me, you know exactly what I mean.
Anyway, this Elie Saab dress is stunning in so many ways and will provide the basis of my spring look book.
Lace
Though I’ve never been much of a lacy fan, I’m reconsidering it for spring. My problem with lace has always been one of too much femininity. It’s romantic, delicate, girly, sweet — none of which I’ve never used to describe my personal style. But this trend saw a lot of diversity at the spring fashion shows and is bringing a new generation of lace that I can definitely get behind — sexy and glamorous.
Bold colors
Let’s turn to another example from the Oscars to prove the power of bold.
This was the first dress I saw on the red carpet and it nearly took my breath away. I didn’t even know who this woman was. Now I know. Twenty-year-old Jennifer Lawrence from Winter’s Bone. 20 years old! Can you believe that? Studies have shown that red is the sexiest color for girls and guys to wear. And doesn’t she look sexy AND confident?
Bold colors should be worn head held high. They make a person stand out in a sea of safe LBDs. And though I am often guilty of choosing the safe black route, which will always be a classic, if you want to turn heads this spring stick with my mantra: Go for the bold!
Accessories: Gold & Lucite
Gold has always been a favorite of mine and seems to be a hot accessory for winter and spring. Gold accessories come in such a wide range they can make a simple outfit more elegant or a party dress more funky. The gold metallic perfectly complements the spring break tan and bold colors, showing off the body’s natural shimmer.
Though lucite was really a big trend last spring, it’s still hot for 2011. Lucite is a solid, transparent plastic, seen everywhere from necklaces to earrings to bangles to high heels. The fun look is a mix of sophistication and innocence. (Aren’t these similar to the plastic bangles I wore growing up?)
Add the two hot accessory trends of gold and lucite together, and you get some amazing modern jewelry.

We often forget what we have. How blessed we are with the many people and things in our life. Sickness followed me into the week and took more out of me than I would have hoped, namely the reminder of all the beautiful things in my life. My week was full of wonderful people and experiences and I choose now to reflect on these moments that slipped by so easily.

[Slowly, but Surely] Answering the Call
Last week my beautiful friend Erin called some fellow bloggers to answer a few questions about “Who are you, really?” Though the “deadline” was supposedly Wednesday night {eek} I have been without internet in my new apartment and am just now getting around to it. However, it must have been fate because I didn’t know the answer to one of them until Thursday as I was unpacking. So here are my answers to Erin’s questions and a few added by my new wonderful neighbor Nicky as she blogged her answers.
*
1. What is your most dear object – the first thing you would grab to save in the instance of a fire?
This was the question I didn’t know the answer to until the other day. When I first read this my first instinct was my phone or computer, but then I thought, No I do not want to be that person, and what is really of importance on either of those things anyway? I’m assuming I would have time to grab four things: 1. Lambchops- this beloved stuffed animal that I still sleep with just gives me that feeling of home and belonging. I plan to keep her and give her to my first born. 2. A birthday book my mom gave me for my 21st birthday that she cut out pictures of me and her and pasted inside that makes me cry every time I read it. 3. Similar to that, a scrapbook I just found again from Pops (my grandpa) that he made and gave to me my for my 16th birthday. It holds pictures from when I was younger that are nowhere else to be found and memories of me and him. This also makes me cry every time I look at it. 4. Along the same line, a picture I had framed of me when I was about seven on Easter sitting between Pops and Marnan.
2. What is your favorite dessert?
I’m going to have to follow along the same lines as Nicky and Erin, because who can choose just one!? Short answer: anything chocolate. Long answer: ice cream, perfectly made brownies, tollhouse cookies, tiramisu, creme brulee, cupcakes from Sprinkles, german chocolate cake, red velvet cake, chocolate from Switzerland…. If you can’t tell, desserts in general are my favorite.
3. What do you do when you’ve had a really no-good, rotten, bad day?
I call my mom. I vent and cry and vent and cry. I call Kyle and ask him to come over with dessert in hand (typically ice cream). I crawl in bed and watch the O.C.
4. If you could be doing anything right now – time, money, or resources be damned – what would you do?
Nicky and Erin took this as a very serious question and their answers were beautiful, but mine isn’t quite the same. If I could be doing anything right this second it would be laying on a HOT HOT HOT private beach somewhere with beautiful, crystal blue waters with Kyle and drinking endless frozen drinks. (Thank you snowmaggedon for this vision)
5. What kind of person do you aspire to be?
I want to be selfless. I want to be full of compassion toward every person I come in contact with. I want to live my life with the greater purpose of following God than simply living for my own reasons. I want to be passionate about whatever I’m doing, even if it’s not exactly what I thought it would be at that moment. I want to be forgiving. I want to be a giver.
6. What is your most valued characteristic in humans?
Trustworthy. Compassionate. Humorous. Joyful. (to name a few, because boy that’s a difficult question)
7. What is your favorite place to be?
Anywhere with Kyle- the one person that can make me laugh no matter what the situation.
8. What would you prepare for your ideal meal? [any time of day – breakfast, lunch, or dinner]
This special chicken my mom makes, fresh delicious veggies, including asparagus, Sister Schubert rolls and a warm, gooey, chocolatey dessert.
9. What do you consider to be among your most important decisions ever made?
Asking for Kyle’s AIM chat name from a mutual friend after he and I met for the first time (centuries ago). Choosing the UA. Going to LA for the IT project.
10. What is your favorite/best/most liked time of the day? Of the week? – and why?
Every Sunday morning going to church with Kyle. It’s so rejuvenating for the rest of the week and getting to spend it and share about it with the one I love is simply perfect.
11. What things/people/situations make you feel joyful?
Seeing friends I haven’t seen in a long time. Doing things that make me feel like a child (i.e. going to the premiere of High School Musical) Doing something/going somewhere solely because it means so much to the other person. Coffee dates. Spending time with people that aren’t afraid to laugh and do it often. Lots of sunshine. The last night of a vacation (though no one wants to leave, its often the best night) Babies.

I would love to hear all of my reader’s answers, but I know that probably won’t happen. So please, please comment with your answer to at least one question.

An Unsuspecting Lesson From Benjamin Franklin
As I’m reading Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography (for class, not pleasure) I’ve been surprised at how much I’ve actually been enjoying it. At first I was merely skimming the book, highlighting phrases I knew I would need to write the essay, but then I caught myself slowing down and actually absorbing Franklin’s words. When I came upon this list, I knew I had to share and I knew I could learn a lot from this historical and intriguing man that made his way from a newspaper editor and printer to a Founding Father of the United States.
Benjamin Franklin’s 13 Virtues
Temperance
Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation
Silence
Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifiling conversation
Order
Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have it’s time
Resolution
Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve
Frugality
Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e. waste nothing
Industry
Lose no time. Be always employed in something useful. Cut off all unnecessary actions.
Sincerity
Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly
Justice
Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty
Moderation
Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve
Cleanliness
Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, or habitation
Tranquility
Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable
Chastity
Rarely use venery but for health and offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another’s peace or reputation
Humility
Imitate Jesus or Socrates
Franklin composed these virtues at age 20 (in 1746) after studying different religions and philosophers and being bogged down by all the ways he was supposed to live his life. He took all he had learned and combined them into what he thought was the proper way to live and cultivate his character. He focused on a virtue a week and tried his hardest to work on that virtue, letting all other virtues happen that week by “ordinary chance”, and wrote down every day his transgressions against his weekly virtue. Keeping all of these records in a pocketbook kept on him at all times, he hoped to see on paper how his life was improving. He claimed living this way, consciously by his virtues, he lived a happier and more successful life.
What I’ve Learned in College, Snow Days Edition
Snow days have quite possibly been some of the highlights of my college career, starting with Ice Storm ’09 which was the week of my birthday and resulted in about 10 people staying in our 2 bedroom apartment for 5 days. Best. Week. Ever.
Then there was Snow Storm ’10 which was, again, the week of my birthday, and this time there were again about 10 people under one roof, though we had upgraded to a 5 person house.
And now, #nwasnow11 with me tucked away inside a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 guys for 3 days. (That could very well be a blog post all on its own)
So here’s what I’ve learned in my three years of college snow days…
1. Whatever the situation, and whoever you are with, make the most of it.
2. Snow days can turn a person inside out- crazy, if you will.
3. Though the Internet is infinite, there is not enough there to sustain you for days when you’re trapped inside a house.
4. Board games are one of the best inventions.
5. So is sleeping.
6. You cannot, I repeat, cannot eat healthy on snow days, no matter how hard you try.
7. I could never live with a household of guys.
8. As much as I want to go outside and play in the snow, I will always complain that I’m cold.
9. Alone time is underrated.
10. Prepare for the worst, expect for the best.
11. You can do whatever you set your mind to. (Such as walking 2.2 miles in the snow just for pizza)
12. Don’t eat yellow snow.
13. Pack some snow in a bucket, put it in your freezer and save it for July. You will wish it was winter again.
14. I am not, and never will be, a video gamer.
15. A pot of pasta can go a long way.
16. Snow day/week inside jokes are the best.
17. Spend a snow day however you want to.
5 Minutes
My soul was unexpectedly revived this morning with a beautiful, inspirational blog post from a beautiful, inspirational friend. She mentions the website Reverb10 as a place to find prompts for introspection from the last year. Yes, I have already done a 2010 reflection post and yes it is nearly a month into 2011, but I want to do anything I can to make sure that years down the road I remember the important steps taken to get me where I am. So, I’ve chosen the prompt:
Imagine you will completely lose your memory of 2010 in five minutes. Set an alarm for five minutes and capture the things you most want to remember about 2010. (Author: Patti Digh)
21st birthday: snow, friends, cops, fights, dancing, love. Vegas. Paris Hilton. seeing the reconstruction of old friendships and building new ones. making your own family wherever you are. game nights: wine, catchphrase, laughing, things, telephone pictionary. learning to let go. the importance of phone dates. learning to re-appreciate my parents. the look in my fiance’s eyes as he proposed. learning to love new people. LA. finding passions: children, human trafficking. weddings. moving and the excitedness that comes with it. the sweetness of doing nothing. the birth of a beautiful child that came to be my godchild.Veronica Mars. community group. the joys of finishing french. having a puppy in the house. realizing who is really important in my life. continually seeing God’s hand in my life.
Confession: I re-set the timer for another 5 minutes after the first one went off. This is way harder than it looks, and I know I didn’t even come close to everything I would want to remember from 2010.
Truths for Mature Humans
Note: I did not write these. I came across them on this site and just had to share. They are perfect, and I agree with every single statement. So funny how these statements are universally true.
1. I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.
2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.
3. I totally take back all those times I didn’t want to nap when I was younger.
4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.
5.How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?
6. Was learning cursive really necessary?
7. MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.
8.Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.
9. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t at least kind of tired.
10. Bad decisions make good stories.
11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren’t going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.
12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after BluRay? I don’t want to have to restart my collection…again.
13. I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.
14. “Do not machine wash or tumble dry” means I will never wash this- ever.
15. I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring, but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voicemail. What did you do after I didn’t answer? Drop the phone and run away?
16. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.
17. I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.
18. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.
19. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than Kay.
20. I wish Google Maps had an “Avoid Ghetto” routing option.
21. Sometimes, I’ll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the heck was going on when I first saw it.
22. I would rather try to carry 10 over-loaded plastic bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.
23.The only time I look forward to a red light is when I’m trying to finish a text.
24.I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.
