[post-thanksgiving] weekend getaway

S U N D A Y   E V E N I N G
The wind wails and the fire cackles.
The garland glimmers and the poodle snores.
Thanksgiving is now behind us and the anticipation of Christmas lies ahead.

In the midst of the busy holiday season, husband and I decided to take a respite, just the two of us. We packed the makings for chili and a special Italian red, and brought only our coziest clothes. We vowed to do a phone detox, focusing on the present weekend with the presence of one another. We drove only an hour away, though we might as well have been a million miles away – with stunning lake views, great conversation and the joy of spontaneous, secluded living.

A few things I learned from this little weekend getaway of ours:

– You don’t need to keep your phone next to you at all times.
– You’re not really missing anything on social media.
– Finishing a book in a weekend is one of the best feelings.
– Sometimes all you need is abundant sunshine and the gift of time to reconnect with your significant other.
– Enjoying a leisurely cup of coffee on a patio is one of life’s little luxuries we should all take advantage of more often.
– Don’t lose sight of what’s most important this holiday season.

Weekend Picturebook: 3rd Annual Cabin Getaway

I cannot believe it’s been three years now that we started one of my favorite traditions. The weekend before Thanksgiving our community group rents a cabin and has a relaxing kid-free/puppy-free weekend doing whatever we please – eating (abundantly), napping (occasionally), laughing (constantly) – and just enjoying each other.

This year we had two new couples join us, and had so much fun and made so many memories we will never forget. (Well, thanks to my blog, that is. :))

[Each couple was responsible for a meal. We had breakfast and did a bagel bar, complete with schmear, lox, prosciutto, cheese, fruit, pb, nutella, etc. etc., and mimosas, of course.]

[Our favorite part of the weekend was all of the hilarious lake signs hanging around the cabin, and working them into conversation all weekend, including this one, which was our favorite – The trout, the trout, and nothing but the trout, so help me cod.]

[I seriously don’t know what I would do without these people in my life. I am so thankful for their friendship and such an incredible weekend.]

Discover Arkansas: Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Ever since I heard about stand up paddle boarding a few years ago, it’s been on my bucket list. I have never been into water sports, but I love being in or near the water. I’ve tried surfing several times (fun fact: I went to surf camp in Santa Barbara for a week when I was in middle school) and enjoy it, but it’s still pretty hard. I thought this would be the perfect solution to be on the water, but not too strenuous.

When SUP first became popular it was only on the coast or in bigger cities. I knew it would take a while to come to NWA. I thought I would get an opportunity to try it before it did, but unfortunately did not. Today, husband and I tried it for the first time, and we are HOOKED. It was exactly like I imagined. I felt so at peace on the water, and just fell in love. Don’t get me wrong – it was hard at first. I was so unsure of myself and my “sea-legs” standing up on the board for the first time, but once you get it, you get it, and it’s like you’re walking on water.

We got up early (6am on a Sunday!) and drove about an hour to a section of Beaver Lake near Eureka Springs. We rented the boards through SUP Outfitters. It was the perfect time to be on the lake – there were no boats out yet, it was about 80 degrees and the water was so calm. It was absolutely beautiful. We had so much fun together exploring the lake. There was only one problem … it was too short! We went for an hour and time seemed to run out just as we were getting the hang of it. Next time, we’re planning to go for 2-3 hours and take a little cooler out with us. Who’s ready?!

After our morning on the lake, we headed to Eureka Springs for brunch at Local Flavor Cafe.

Weekend Picturebook: Cabin Getaway

It’s amazing what one weekend away (even less than an hour from your home) can do for your soul. This was one of the most relaxing weekends I’ve ever had, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

This weekend a year ago we had our first cabin getaway with our community group and had so much fun. You can see last year’s blog post with photos here. We decided to make it an annual tradition and fortunately followed through with our plans a year later.

There were significant differences this year versus last year.

Last year: It was freezing outside – snowing and icing on our drive in.
This year: It was 60 degrees and raining the WHOLE time.

Last year: Despite the cold, we got out and explored, hiked, caved.
This year: We literally didn’t get out of our pajamas all day. Literally.

Last year: We played Scrabble and watched Gremlins.
This year: We did a puzzle and watched Catch Me If You Can AND Top Gun AND Caught on Camera AND the Razorbacks. (We were stuck inside all day, remember?!)

Last year: We were positive there was a ghost in the cabin.
This year: We were positive someone was pranking us hiding boxers in the cabin.

Last year: We spent an evening desperately praying for our Campbells that they would get pregnant as they so wished.
This year: We spent a weekend joyously discussing baby plans, celebrating their pregnancy!

That’s what makes an annual get together so fun – it changes every year (we deeply missed our Hotarys who couldn’t make it this year!), but no matter what, when you’re with the right people it’s always a time to remember.

I pray we will continue this annual tradition for so many years to come. Until then, I’ll enjoy the memories we’ve made thus far!
