Extroverted Introverts: Who They Are and Why I Am One

landscape-1454713340-easy-a-1

If you were to ask husband whether I’m an extrovert or an introvert, he would say undoubtedly extrovert. I would strongly disagree. And I did. And we had a 30-minute semi-heated debate about it.

We eventually came to the same conclusion – we’re both extroverted introverts, but I’m a little more on the extroverted side than he is.

I had always thought I was an extrovert. But then I heard it’s about how you recharge, either with people or without, so I thought for sure I was an introvert. I’ve always loved being with people and hanging out in big groups, but I equally loved (and needed) my alone time. (This became apparently clear when I lived with 4 roommates in college.)

Was I an anomaly? Did anyone else feel the same way?

I saw an article recently about extroverted introverts. I clicked, read the article, read another article and was 100% convinced I’d finally found a term to describe me.

So, here’s a little insight into extroverted introverts aka ME …

  1. We’re often quiet, and don’t feel the need to talk all the time.
    • I enjoy listening to people and observing them. I’m very perceptive and want to really understand who you are as I’m getting to know you. This is part of why I loved Journalism so much because it was acceptable to ask a lot of questions and just listen.
  1. We enjoy one-on-one conversations and hate small talk.
    • Want to grab coffee or wine and talk? I would love that. I hate small talk, and would much rather talk about something real so I can get to know you more.
  1. We’re open to meeting your other friends. Just let us know ahead of time that we’ll be meeting new people so we can mentally prepare ourselves to socialize.
    • SO so true, and it’s hard to explain to someone who doesn’t understand this. I need to know the level of energy I’m going to need at an event. If it’s just my two best friends that’s one thing, but if they’re bringing two new people that’s an entirely different thing.
  1. It can be hard to get us out, but we’ll have a great time when we go out.
    • If I get home and put my sweats on and hair up, THEN you call me to go out, it will be difficult to get me out of the house. But if I do go, I’ll always have a great time.
  1. We get mad at ourselves for wanting to stay in and letting our friends down.
    • This isn’t just about FOMO, but I also feel genuinely bad when I don’t hang out with friends when they want me to, and can beat myself up for just wanting to stay in.
  1. Let’s talk about weekends – we love to socialize, but we also need time to recharge.
    • I was just telling someone the other day, I can go out on a Friday night, but then I better not have plans on Saturday night. I need my time at home to recharge, read my book and just chill. Doing something every weekday or weekend evening is just too much.
  1. We make new friendships easily, but have trouble maintaining them.
    • When in social mode, I find it easy to make new friends. Maintaining those friendships is another story. It’s hard to disperse my energy between lots of people.
  1. When in a comfortable setting, we can often be the life of a party.
    • My extrovertedness can easily come out when I’m with the right people, that’s why so often people think I am an extrovert because that’s what gets the attention. But …
  1. We can be so content at home all day doing nothing.
    • True extroverts want to be out and about all the time, doing something, with someone. They don’t turn down an invitation to hang out. And I do, absolutely I do, because I truly enjoy doing nothing sometimes.
  1. But it’s a delicate balance.
    • If I stayed home all weekend doing absolutely nothing, I would be so ready to call up all my friends and party Monday night. But if I went out all weekend, I would be overwhelmed and exhausted and stressed and just not in a good place. This often clashes with my people pleasing personality and I will say yes to things all weekend, and I end up so discontent Sunday evening.

So now you know –

if you invite me to do something and I say no, it’s not you. It’s me.

My Top 5 Shows of 2016 So Far …

It’s the golden age of TV, people. And I’m loving it.

We’re halfway through 2016 and we’ve already had some incredible TV shows. And the exciting part is, there’s still so much more to come! I will definitely do another post about upcoming fall premieres I’m excited about, but for now, here are my top shows of 2016 so far.

the-good-wife-final-season

The Good Wife, Final Season (CBS)

The Good Wife was overall an incredible show, and will definitely go down as an all-time favorite. However, after Will died then Kalinda left, it kind of lost its way. I wasn’t as interested and just kept watching to watch, but they really picked it up in the final season. It had the excitement of the episodic cases again, and the sexy allure with Jeffrey Dean Morgan they’d been missing since Will. While I didn’t love the finale, I still give the season two thumbs up. Cheers to Alicia Florrick and Mr. Big.

150316-news-peoplevojThe People vs. O.J. Simpson (FX)

I am still surprised by how much I was enthralled in this show. Since I was very young when this happened in RL, I didn’t remember all of the details of the case or the specifics of the trial, so it made it that much more dramatic. But even if I had known everything that happened, this show still would have pulled me in. It’s a classic drama with terrific acting and great storytelling. You won’t be able to stop watching, and will still hold your breath while waiting for the jury’s verdict.

We_watched_the_new_ESPN-4371e8e8da17809565016506c4b855c3

O.J.: Made in America (ESPN)

This is definitely one of the best, if not THE best, documentary I’ve ever seen. Comprised of 5 episodes at an hour and a half each, it goes into tremendous detail, but not once do you feel like it’s dragging on. This is a complex story and this documentary tells it so well. I was truly fascinated hearing about O.J. as a “Football god”, understanding the backdrop of race relations in LA and listening to present day interviews from the lawyers, jurors and journalists. I enjoyed watching the drama first, then watching this to see all the nitty gritty details.

orphan blackOrphan Black, Season 4 (BBC)

This is a constant favorite of mine and always makes my end of year lists, so if you STILL haven’t watched it, you clearly don’t value my opinion. Its one of the few shows where I can’t take my eyes of the screen because I’m so hooked the entire episode. Tatiana Maslany, playing multiple clones, is truly one of the most gifted actress I’ve ever seen. Next season is the last, and you can feel a deliberate storyline leading to answers, which I appreciate.

the-affair-recap-14oct14

The Affair (Showtime)

This one is kind of a cheat, because we haven’t finished this season aired in 2016 yet. We flew through season 1 and just started season 2, but thought I’d add it to my list anyway. This show is thrilling and intense and captivating in such a unique way. The cinematography is beautiful and the storytelling is fascinating as you see extremely different perspectives both sides of the affair. Wonderfully done, and I can’t wait to finish the season.

mr-robotBONUS: Mr. Robot, Season 2 (USA)

Okay, okay. I haven’t seen this one yet, but it airs TONIGHT and I’m so so excited. Since we finished season 1 we’ve been dying for more. And as husband said, we know it will be incredible, so it needs to be on the list.

Also ….
Currently Bingeing: Veep, The Affair, The O.C. (for the 100th time)
Summer Guilty Pleasure: The Bachelorette (#TeamLuke!)
Next on our Watchlist: Game of Thrones (seasons 3-6), Love (Netflix original), Homeland (season 4-5), The Americans, American Crime

Peanut Butter Cup Cheesecake Bars {recipe}

Let me just start off by saying – these peanut butter cup cheesecake bars will rock your world. Seriously. I made them for a family gathering 3 weeks ago and everyone is still talking about them. Then I made them again last week for another event.

Peanut Butter cups + peanut butter and chocolate chips + cream cheese. I mean, come onnnn!

They are super rich, which is something I don’t say often, so beware, but they are seriously amazing. They’re also super easy to whip up quickly, and are very hard to mess up.

Try ’em out, let me know what you think, and bring me one of your leftovers.

{How ooey, gooey delicious does that look?!}

Ingredients
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs
5 tbsp butter, melted
5 oz cream cheese, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
8 standard size Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, each chopped into four pieces
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup peanut butter chips

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a large bowl mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar to prepare the cake mixture. Add in melted butter and stir to combine. Add in one of the eggs and stir to combine well. Press mixture into an 8×8 sized baking pan and set aside.

3. Place the chopped peanut butter cups into the pan on top of the cake mixture. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup chocolate chips and 1/2 cups peanut butter chips.

4. In a separate bowl mix together softened cream cheese, egg, vanilla and powdered sugar. Stir until well combined then pour mixture over the top of your cake mixture and chocolates. Spread gently with a spatula to cover. Sprinkle top of cream cheese layer with remaining chocolate and peanut butter chips.

5. Bake for approximately 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. The middle of mine always looks like it’s not totally done cooking, but the edges are golden, so I take it out of the oven and let it continue cooking on the stove for a bit, and it’s perfect. Enjoy!

4th of July Staycation

The last month has been BUSY – St. Lucia, family wedding, work trip to LA. So I have been yearning for some serious time to relax and spend quality time with husband, for longer than just a few hours after work.

As we approached the 3-day weekend I realized we (surprisingly) didn’t have any plans. And I told husband I wanted to keep it that way (again, surprisingly).

Though I did have a few moments of FOMO this weekend, I quickly realized I really wasn’t missing out on anything. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I was perfectly content spending my 4th of July weekend at home.

Book Reviews: The Widow, The Housewife and The Lover

Image-1-2
The Widow – Fiona Barton: I read this book a while ago and to be completely honest when I went to write this review I couldn’t remember for the life of me what the book was about. That wasn’t a good sign. Once I looked it up, I remembered the story and remembered how unimpressed I was. Touted as another “Gone Girl” type thriller, it was not. The twists were unsurprising and the characters were flat. Leave this one be.
Grade: C

American Housewife: Stories – Helen Ellis: This one on the other hand was exactly what I needed after The Widow. The short stories about American housewives were hilarious – everything you’d expect from and everything you wouldn’t. There were a few stories I skimmed over, but overall these were funny, engaging and made you wish you were an American Housewife (if only for the stories).
Grade: A-

Along the Infinite Sea – Beatriz Williams: This book captured me from the first chapter. It tells the story of two very different women, one growing up in WWII and one in 1960s America, and how their lives intertwine. This is a dazzling love story that will sweep you off your feet, thanks to the incredible writing. By the end I was bawling and dying for more.
Grade: A+

Attachments – Rainbow Rowell: It took me a bit to get in to this book, but it turned out to be a cute, easy read. Half the book is two friends writing back and forth to each other via email at work about their personal lives, and the other half is about the IT guy who’s reading these emails and falls in love with one of the girls. It’s quirky, it’s cute and it will make you think twice about sending that private email at work.
Grade: B+

Now That’s What I Call the ’80s [Movie Edition]

Y’all know I love entertainment and pop culture. I blog about my favorite TV shows all the time, and have been to Sundance Film Festival (and Bentonville Film Festival!) twice. For some reason though, there are a lot of classic ’80s movies I seem to have missed.

Yes, I was born in ’89 so it does makes sense why I wasn’t watching movies in the ’80s, but as a film lover I think this is totally unacceptable.

And so do my co-workers. So they’ve started me a list.

Husband and I have started on the list, and so far have made it through 4 of 21 – though the list grows by the day, so I’m not quite sure how we’ll keep up. Here’s what we’ve seen so far –

Animal-House-College-TShirt-Feature-Image-College-Mistakes-Post-700x466

Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) – Hilarious. Love Steve Martin and John Candy. We would totally watch this again.
Groundhog Day (1993) – Bill Murray humor is everything. They just don’t make good, clean funny movies like this anymore.
Ghostbusters (1984)- Funny and entertaining. Again, gotta love Bill Murray.
Animal House  (1978) – Pretty funny, but not hilarious. John Belushi had some classic moments, but overall movie was just so random.

The List:

Beverly Hills Cop
The Goonies
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Stand by Me
*Girls Just Want to Have Fun
*Splash
The Natural
The Money Pit
Better Off Dead
Rocky movies
Say Anything
*Can’t Buy Me Love
*Mannequin
Weird Science
Wall Street
The Lost Boys
Dumb and Dumber

*Denotes girly movie to watch without husband

What other classic movies should I add to my list?

(Note: I have already seen the following – All John Hughes movies, Top Gun, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Back to the Future, Dirty Dancing, Princess Bride, Footloose, When Harry Met Sally….)
