Favorite Things: Gift Edition

Screen Shot 2015-12-06 at 5.33.24 PM

  1. Bobbi Brown Lip Balm – Sephora, $20
I’m so obsessed with this lip balm. It feels amazing, has the perfect amount of shine, and comes in a cute tin. This is a great stocking stuffer. (Hint, hint..)
  2. Magazine Subscription – Price varies by magazine
This is a great gift because you can choose a magazine based on the person’s interests, and it keeps giving all year round. I was gifted Real Simple for Christmas a few years ago, and thought it was such a great idea. It’s also so much more affordable than you’d think!
  3. Plaid Scarf – Etsy, $20
This is the BEST scarf. It’s big, cozy and perfectly plaid. I’ve seen these in local stores for $40, so this is a great deal and I can personally attest the scarf is great quality.
  4. Personalized Mug – Etsy, $14
This is another great gift you can personalize! For example, this one is perfect for me, but if you just search Etsy, you’ll definitely find one for anyone on your list. You could even fill it with candy, coffee, a gift card, etc.
  5. Zodiac Necklace – Sequin NYC, $48
My mom got me this for my golden birthday this year, and I’ve loved it. I get compliments on it every time I wear it because it’s so unique. This would make a perfect gift for the accessory lover or sign-obsessed.
  6. “Why Not Me?” by Mindy Kaling – Walmart, $15
Books are always great gifts. (If you need more recommendations, check mine out here!) And this is a great new book that will keep you laughing all the way through. Have I mentioned before how much I love Mindy?!

How to Throw a Star Wars Watch Party, By a Non-Star Wars Fan

Until last night, I had never seen a Star Wars movie. (Well, supposedly I saw one in the theater with Husband, but all I could tell you about it was that Natalie Portman was in it. And I didn’t know until last night that she isn’t Princess Leia…)

Well, now I’ve seen three. But it took about 6 months to convince me to watch them.

Here’s the secret – turn something into a themed party, and I’ll watch anything. I was inspired by this Buzzfeed list – 17 Foods Guaranteed to Excite Any “Star Wars” Fan – so I gathered the troops for a watch party. Star Wars themed attire encouraged. Star Wars themed food required.

Guess what, it was a success! Themed food and drinks are always so much more fun, as you’ll see below. The movies, well … I can’t say I’m a big fan, but I will absolutely be re-wearing my Star Wars shirt to the premiere. (And maybe sneak in some themed food …)

Homemade Alfredo Sauce {Recipe} + How Index Cards Will Make Your Life Easier

Often I get in moods to bake. Sometimes I get in moods to cook. Rarely I get in moods to meal plan.

This weekend I did all three, and I’m so glad I did. Mostly the last one. Keep reading and you’ll see why.

B A K E – Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread

I’d already spent a full day in my pajamas – watching TV, cleaning the house, reading magazines, organizing my closet, watching more TV – and by 5pm I was done. I needed to get out of the house or do something. (It was 40 degrees and raining, so I chose the latter.)

Pumpkin bread is one of my favorite things and I typically make it every fall. I posted a recipe here last year. This year I tried a new recipe and added mini chocolate chips. Turned out fine, not great, but it kept my idle hands busy, and now I have a loaf to share with some friends later this week.

C O O K – Homemade Alfredo Sauce

Next up was dinner. Of course we had no food, and of course I didn’t want to go to the grocery store. (Reminder: it was 40 degrees and raining!!) I decided to raid the pantry and refrigerator and force something to work. I found half a box of pasta and chicken in the freezer … but no sauce.

Then it hit me. How do you make alfredo sauce? It can’t be that hard, right? Or have that many ingredients, right? Y’all. I’m never buying jar alfredo sauce AGAIN. Okay, I never bought it in the first place, because I’m not really an alfredo fan, but seriously, now I am. It was SO easy, and SO delicious.

Ingredients:
1/2 c butter
8 oz. cream cheese (which we happened to have leftover from our bagel bar)
2 c milk
2 teaspoons garlic powder
6 oz grated parmesan cheese
black ground pepper
dash of nutmeg

Directions:

  1. Melt butter in a medium, non-stick saucepan over medium heat. Add cream cheese and garlic powder, stirring with wire whisk until smooth. Add milk, a little at a time, whisking to smooth out lumps. Stir in Parmesan and pepper. Remove from heat when sauce reaches desired consistency. Sauce will thicken rapidly, thin with milk if cooked too long. Toss with hot pasta to serve.

Meal planning for the week is the worst. Can I get an amen?? It just seems so difficult to decide what to eat for dinner every single night. And cook it. And clean it up. And do it all over again the next week.

Well, husband had a great idea. Write down all of our recipes on index cards, then each Sunday choose from the stack for the week, add all ingredients to Walmart Pickup-Grocery (seriously, life changing) and that’s it!

Screen Shot 2015-11-30 at 6.58.04 PM
I spent several hours Sunday going through recipes on my blog, on Pinterest and cookbooks. I wrote the name and ingredients on one side, and the location of the recipe on the back. Maybe someday I’ll write the full recipe on there, but this was a good start. I also added asterisks to the top right of foods that are whole 30 approved.

You could even take this one step further and pin it somewhere in the kitchen so the whole family can see what’s for dinner for the week.

Screen Shot 2015-11-30 at 6.57.47 PM
I love this idea, and I think it will make meal planning so much easier, and the great thing is, I can keep adding to my index cards when I find more recipes I enjoy!

Do you have tips for meal planning? Or a favorite recipe you want to share, so I can add it to a card?

Weekend Picturebook: 3rd Annual Cabin Getaway

I cannot believe it’s been three years now that we started one of my favorite traditions. The weekend before Thanksgiving our community group rents a cabin and has a relaxing kid-free/puppy-free weekend doing whatever we please – eating (abundantly), napping (occasionally), laughing (constantly) – and just enjoying each other.

This year we had two new couples join us, and had so much fun and made so many memories we will never forget. (Well, thanks to my blog, that is. :))

Oh, Baby

Let’s go ahead and get this out there – I’m not pregnant. But that’s exactly what this post is about.

Here are the facts: I’m 26, Husband is 28. We’ve been married for 4 1/2 years. We always had a 5 year plan – Go on a big, two-week European vacation (done), then start trying to have kids.

If you had asked me two months ago if that was still the case, I would have said yes. I had baby fever like you wouldn’t believe. One of our dear friends had her adorable baby boy several months ago, and of course that made my fever skyrocket. Everyone around me was getting pregnant, and I thought I was so ready. There was just one little problem, Husband was not ready. (That might be a problem, right?)

I fought it. I knew I was right, that we were ready, there was no time like the present, we weren’t getting younger, etc. etc. I was devastated that I so desperately wanted a baby at this moment and Husband wasn’t quite there yet.

Then I got some wise words of advice – Pray for God to align your hearts.

So I did. And you know how they say, “Be careful what you wish for”?

A month ago, we went on a trip of a lifetime. We enjoyed every minute of the trip and every minute with each other. Then we came home and I realized something, I wasn’t ready to have a baby. I was enjoying this precious time with Husband so much, and there were still so many adventures for us to go on.

God sure did align our hearts, but He aligned mine to Husband’s, instead of the other way around which I was POSITIVE would be the case. God’s pretty funny, yeah? I know this was His plan all along.

It’s easy to get frustrated when people around you want you to have a baby, and talk about it or ask about it a lot. But then I realized something, we are SO lucky to have those people in our lives because they love us and are just excited for us. We are SO lucky to have two incredible families within 20 miles of us who will be there for us every step of the way once we do get pregnant and do have a baby.

So no, we will not be having a baby soon, but you can keep asking. Because I will not get frustrated, but instead, with a genuine smile will say, “Not right now. I’m enjoying time with my Husband.”

Italian Sausage Tortellini Soup {recipe}

I’m currently dealing with a split personality.

I’m obsessing over Fall – the gorgeous weather, the vibrant leaves (see below, oooh ahhhh), the pumpkin spice lattes everything, the boots, the scarves, I could go on and on.

Screen Shot 2015-11-09 at 5.13.03 PM

But I’m also SO ready for the holiday season – the merry music, the red Starbucks cups, the festive parties. (I might have already decorated our house this weekend, and I have no shame about it.)

However, I’m still holding on to a piece of the current season, and with the dip in temperatures this weekend, I turned to a new recipe that is so perfectly Fall. Enter Italian Sausage Tortellini Soup.

I’ve never been a big soup fan because they just aren’t hearty enough, but this one is quite the opposite and has just as much flavor.

Seriously though, I didn’t even get a good picture, but I just had to share because it is so damn good and so damn easy. Enjoy!

I T A L I A N   S A U S A G E   T O R T E L L I N I   S O U P

via

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 lb Italian Sausage – we used sweet sausage and it was perfect
  • 1/2 cup diced onion (about 1/2 medium sized onion)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic
  • 1-28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1-32. oz. box of vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped basil (I used basil powder since I couldn’t find fresh in my store)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 package tortellini
  • 1 cup packed fresh spinach
  • Topping: Shredded parmesan – the real, good stuff!

Directions

  1. Heat a large, heavy bottomed pan over medium-high heat. Heat vegetable oil and add diced onion. Saute until onions are soft.
  2. Crumble Italian Sausage and garlic with the onion. Cook until sausage is no longer pink.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, vegetable broth, basil, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and cover. Let soup simmer for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Add tortellini and spinach and simmer for about ten minutes, until pasta is tender.
  5. Serve with shredded Parmesan.

TV Reviews: Fall 2015

Calling all TV show junkies like me, below are my mid-mid-season reviews of my shows too far. If you’re judging me for how many shows I watch, you’re clearly not the target audience for this post, so just stop now and keep your mouth shut. If you’re loving me for how many shows I watch, we should clearly be friends and we have a lot to discuss.

Jane-Virgin-Season-2-Details

5/5 Stars

The Walking Dead – Oh my gosh, this season has been phenomenal. The best in a while. (Note: This rating is purely under the assumption my boy is alive.)

Jane the Virgin –Binged S1 on Netflix, and I’m so in love with Jane and Rafael and this show. And now Mateo, awwwww! [pictured]

iZombie – This is the most underrated show ever. I feel like no one is watching it, and everyone needs to! I need it to stay on air!

*NEW* Quantico – From the first episode I’ve been totally hooked. It’s so intense and the main girl is so gorgeous you can just stare at her the whole show.

12-mindy-project2.w529.h352

4/5 Stars

Nashville – Good season so far, but so ready for Scarlett and Gunnar to get back together already and for Juliette to stop being ridiculous.

Mindy Project – This show started out so hilarious I couldn’t take it. However, the last few eps have been duds, so hoping it can come back strong. [pictured]

scandal-season-5-episode-1-recap-3

3.5/5 Stars

Scandal –  FINALLY Olivia and Fitz are together together. Good season so far, but still not where it used to be. [pictured]

How to Get Away With Murder – They’ve kept me more hooked so far than I thought they could, but I’m still concerned about how sustainable the show really is.

Big Bang Theory – I laugh out loud every time I watch the show, but I hate how they married Penny and Leonard after all they’ve been through, so I guess I’m still a little bitter.

BLOOD & OIL - "The Ripple Effect" - The aftermath of the robbery has suspicions flying as all signs indicate an inside job at Briggs Oil. Wick scrambles to do everything he can to hide his involvement, but his accomplice may prove to be too much of a wild card and expose Wick's part in the crime that nearly killed his father. Meanwhile, the arrival of Hap's daughter, Lacey, stokes a rivalry with Carla, Hap's wife. Also, Billy continues to be seduced by Hap's world and jumps into another deal with him without consulting his wife, Cody, on "Blood & Oil," airing SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Fred Hayes) CHACE CRAWFORD

3/5 Stars

Empire – I think I gave myself too high of expectations. The first season of this show can never be beat, and that’s very clear this season.

*NEWBlood & Oil – Okay, to be honest, there are only three reasons I’m watching this show:
1. Chace Crawford aka Nate Archibald (Gossip Girl) [pictured]
2. Wilson Bethel aka Wade Kinsella (Hart of Dixie)
3. Scott Michael Foster aka  Cappie (Greek)

*NEWBlindspot – I would have given this even less of a rating if not for the last two episodes. It has potential, but they need to remove the cheese factor a bit.

SCREAM QUEENS: Pictured L-R: Billie Lourd as Chanel #3, Emma Roberts as Chanel Oberlin and Abigail Breslin as Chanel #5 in "Pilot," the first part of the special, two-hour series premiere of SCREAM QUEENS airing Tuesday, Sept. 22 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2015 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Steve Dietl/FOX.

2/5 Stars – Officially CUT from the watchlist

Scream Queens – I watched the pilot on the plane to Europe and thought it was hilarious. Then, it went downhill so fast. I don’t know if it’s a comedy/horror/both/neither, and I can’t waste my previous TV watching time while they figure it out.

What are your favorite shows this season?
