My New Legal Vocabulary, Thanks To “The Good Wife”

Season-2-Protoshoot-Peter-Alicia-and-Will-the-good-wife-15371131-889-600

My latest show binge has been The Good Wife. It’s been on my list for a while for three reasons:
(1) I love shows with a strong, female lead
(2) Julianna Margulies has won or been nominated for the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama 4 times in the last 5 years
(3) Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry) from Gilmore Girls is a main character ❤

I’m currently on Season 3 of 5 and I feel like I could pass the bar exam purely due to my binge-watching. Here are a few new words in my vocabulary …

Recuse: to reject or challenge (a judge or juror) as disqualified to act, especially because of interest or bias.

Voir Dire: a preliminary examination of a witness or a juror by a judge or counsel.

Jury Nullification: a jury returns a verdict that is the opposite of what the jury believes or the verdict it was instructed to return by the court.

Held in Contempt: When a court decides that an action constitutes contempt of court, it can issue a court order that in the context of a court trial or hearing declares a person or organization to have disobeyed or been disrespectful of the court’s authority.

Continuance: a postponement or adjournment

Sustained vs Overruled:

Sustained:  When an objection is sustained, the judge has determined that is a valid objection.  That means the question was improper under the rules of evidence.  The witness may not answer the question.

Overruled:  When an objection is overruled, the judge has determined the objection is invalid.  The question may stand.  The witness must then answer the question.

Punitive Damages: damages exceeding simple compensation and awarded to punish the defendant.

ASA: Assistant State’s Attorney is hired or appointed to the position by the elected state’s attorney and derives the power to act on behalf of the state in criminal prosecutions through the state’s attorney. The duties of an ASA include those of the state’s attorney—representing the state (prosecution) in criminal proceedings.

The trick is weaving my new vocabulary into everyday conversation in my non-legal workplace. Think anyone would object if I tried to ask someone leading a meeting to recuse himself?

Fall TV: The 4 Season Premieres I’m Most Excited About

Okay, we know I’m a TV junkie and we know Fall TV is starting back soon, thus, we must know I’m ridiculously excited. Last season we started pairing down our shows and only the best made the cut. We removed four from our lineup: Glee, New Girl, How I Met Your Mother (series finale), Modern Family and added one: The Blacklist.

Here’s what I’m most looking forward to this season …

I am so in love with this couple and this show. I re-watched the first two seasons this Summer in preparation and laughted ’til I cried. Every episode just makes me so happy. Mostly for Mindy and Danny, but also Peter and Morgan.

NASHVILLE

I got behind on this show last season, then watched the last 5 episodes in a day and was reminded why I love it so much – the music, the drama, the scandals, the love triangles. Seriously, after the last episode I listened to Gunnar’s “It Ain’t Yours To Throw Away” at least twice a day.

I don’t know how they do it, but this show just keeps getting more and more intense. The season ended with the gang (minus a few, including baby judith) locked up in a train car about to get eaten by cannibals. How will they get out and will they go to DC?! At least we know bad-ass Rick is finally back.

Okay, okay, I’ll admit it – the only reason I’m so excited for this show is Ryan Atwood, Ben McKenzie. But it doesn’t hurt that Husband is the biggest Batman fan ever and is also super excited for this. It has some pretty high expectations so I hope it can live up to them. Either way, there will be eye candy.

{Also on our watchlist: Scandal, Revenge, The Blacklist, Big Bang Theory

The show I’m currently side-watching from S1: The Good Wife}

What show are you looking forward to this season?

My newfound {terribly surprising} love of NPR

I’ve never been much of a radio listener. I enjoy music of course, but always hated talk radio. Growing up on road trips when my parents would turn on talk radio or sports I thought it was the worst thing in the world. But the worst of the worst was when they turned on NPR – UGH. In my mind, NPR was an old-person radio station with boring news by boring people who have boring, monotonous voices.

I had a very negative connotation of NPR for years, until just last week.

As I’ve stated previously, we recently gave up cable and one of the things I miss most is watching/listening to The Today Show in the mornings while getting ready for work. When husband said there was a new NPR app he wanted to listen to in the mornings, I was hesitant to try it, but wanted something to fill the void even if it was the old-person radio.

NPR One is similar to Pandora – you can skip the segments you don’t want to hear and mark what you find interesting so it caters content to you. Guess what … it’s incredible.

I do still have a problem with the monotonous voices (I know, that’s just radio, but I guess I need more flair than that). But the content is fascinating. I’ve realized I don’t necessarily enjoy listening to the typical news segments, local, national or global, but I love the random stories I would never hear otherwise.

Here’s a few things I’ve learned from NPR this week …

  • There are things called Morning Glory Raves. Strip away the drugs and alcohol typical to a rave, keep the loud music and energetic dancing and do it at 6:30am on a weekday. There are smoothie and espresso bars. People bring their kids. It’s a family-friendly party before work and school, and it sounds amazing. Currently only in London, Bangalore, Sydney, New York and San Fran, I’m thinking of starting one in Bentonville.
  • Guys are more likely to say “uh” and girls are more likely to say “um.” When people say “uh” they’re searching for what to say and when they say “um” they’re searching for how to say it. Fascinating.
  • Hops, a main ingredient in craft beer, is steadily rising in price due to the increasing popularity of craft beers in the US.
  • There are only 1,600 pandas in the entire world and 300 are in captivity. One of those 1,600 had triplets this week, which is extremely extremely rare.
  • Of all the U.S. currency in the world, nearly 80% is in $100 bills. That’s about a trillion dollars. One economist is suggesting doing away with the bill because it’s beneficial mostly to criminals (drug lords, human traffickers, etc.) to smuggle money more easily.

Where else but NPR would I have learned all of this as well as kept abreast on what’s happening with Ebola, Ferguson, Mo. and the interstate construction in Arkansas?

I guess I’m officially a convert, and I can’t wait for the day when my kids think I’m an old, boring person listening to talk radio on road trips.

Summer Nights + Why You Don’t Need Cable

When we moved into our new home we decided to give up cable. Really the only time we watched it anyway was in the mornings watching The Today Show (which I do miss) and randomly at nights when we didn’t have a specific show to watch. The majority of time though we were watching Hulu Plus, Netflix or Amazon Instant Video.

If you haven’t made the switch to no cable yet, let me fill you in on a secret – It’s totally worth it.

There will definitely be some growing pains. Like I said, I can’t turn on the news in the morning and listen to the top stories and hear the weather for the week. If there’s a show I really want to watch live I have to find somewhere to watch it (like PLL last week at my Mom’s house … #dontjudgeme.) I sometimes miss shows I wouldn’t stream like Wheel of Fortune, Duck Dynasty or House Hunters.

But let me tell you the biggest benefit of it all (besides saving money) – it will seem like you have so much more free time. Maybe you’re not like us, but before we gave up cable, this would be our routine: come home, turn on the tv, start making dinner, watch tv during dinner, watch tv after dinner. But since we don’t have that option anymore, we’re way more selective about what we watch. We don’t just turn on the tv to turn it on for noise. If we turn it on it’s to watch a show we really want to watch.

Now, let me remind you, we’re tv watchers – we have so many shows we keep up with during the season it’s a little insane. Then in the Summer usually we pick a few shows we want to start watching or catch up on that we don’t have time to watch during the year. Summer 2014 was Orange Is The New Black, but we finished that a few weeks ago and haven’t started anything else. Even though I get an itch every now and then to start a new show so we have something to watch, I’m trying to hold back. It’s like an addiction. We don’t need something to watch every night. We have plenty of other things to fill our time. Instead we’ve been …

playing ball with Olli in the backyard,
reading together on the couch or going to bed early to lay in bed and read,
sitting on the porch really talking about our days,
cooking dinner together,
cleaning up dinner together,
hanging out with friends,
going on walks

It’s really felt like Summer – long nights with seemingly unending sunlight. So I implore you, even if you decide to keep cable, maybe turn it off just for the Summer. (How many good tv shows are on right now anyway?) Or maybe just have specific no tv nights during the week.

I hope you will find it as refreshing as we have.

I Think I Could Survive in Prison — and Other Things I’ve Learned From “Orange Is The New Black”

Screen Shot 2014-06-16 at 6.09.37 PM

We’ve officially caught up with the rest of the population and become OITNB fans. I actually think we did it the right way. We binged on the first season right when the second one came out, so we didn’t have to wait a year to see the fallout from the finale. We are SO CLOSE to finishing the second season I can hardly stand it.

I was skeptical at first, why would I want to watch a show about women in prison? Well if you’re still one of the ones asking, let me tell you why – it puts a whole new perspective on the prison system and the people in prison. Not just numbers in an orange jumpsuit, but faces and names and backstories. It shows you they’re real people who make mistakes, just like you and me.

Yes, just like you and me, who could go to prison, and if you do, remember these tips …

1. Never insult the cooking. Ever. Lesson learned day 1.

2. Make friends with everyone – the guards, the fast-talking hispanics, the born-again/crazy-again Christian, the one with crazy eyes, the ex-girlfriend  – wait, don’t do that one. And if you do befriend the crazy eyes, just be prepared, dandelion.

3. If you have your choice in jobs, choose the library.

4. Take showers 30 seconds or less … you never know what might come out of the drain.

5. Speaking of the bathroom – get up EARLY to do your business. The bathrooms with the doors are the first to go.

6. Don’t assume anything of anyone, good or bad. You don’t know their story and what they’ve been through to get where they are.

7. Find out what everyone’s vices are. You will have to bribe, and if you have someone’s favorite candy, makeup or *cough*contraband*cough* it will come in handy.

8. Don’t say anything on the phone that can get you in trouble.

9. Inappropriate things happen in the chapel. Just stay out if not for a service.

10. One person can change the course of everything. Remember #2.

11. If you’re engaged when you go in, tell your fiance you will most likely {at least} kiss a girl in prison, so don’t get too riled up over it. When in Rome.

12. And lastly, very importantl, send in a check for commissary items WEEKS in advance. Otherwise you’ll be making shower shoes out of maxipads.

How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, Part II

the-walking-dead-season-4-rick-grimes-2

As crazy as this sounds, The Walking Dead is a big part of our life. It’s the only TV show we watch live every week. We often watch it with a group of other zombie-obsessors. We spend at least 30 min-1 hour dissecting the episode and what’s going to happen next. And we even dedicate another hour of our Sunday to watching The Talking Dead. What is it about the show that makes it so perfect? I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s so.freaking.good!

I’ve written two other posts about the show (How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, Sundays are DEAD to me), but with the Season 4 season finale last night I decided to follow up the former with a Part II. We’ve learned a lot since I wrote that post 2 seasons ago. While those tips are definitely still relevant, below are some more advanced lessons we’ve learned.

1. Keep your legs closed. I understand the need for intimacy in a time like this, but without protection, it’s just a no. Babies are way too much of a hassle in this situation and will put others in danger.

2. Don’t trust anyone outside your group, and if you’re considering inviting others to join your group, don’t forget to ask them the 3 questions: How many walkers have you killed? How many people have you killed? Why?

3. However, if you do find people you can trust – stick together at all costs.

4. Get over yourself. You’re going to have to do things you never thought you would (and I mean NEVER thought you would … case in point, season finale). That does not make you a bad person, that’s just life now.

5. As with #1, I also understand the desire to drink in a time like this, but again, it’s just a no. Is it really worth it to lower your inhibitions with zombies and other people trying to constantly kill you?!

6. Ration your food. You may get overly excited when you find a 112 oz. can of chocolate pudding, but you’re going to want that later when there’s nothing but a rabbit leg to eat.

7. Get creative. Unfortunately these days, shooting and stabbing aren’t the only ways you’ll need to kill.

8. If you’re staying in one place for a while, always have a getaway plan that can be executed very quickly.

9. Get a bow and arrow and practice shooting it. It will be invaluable.

10. Trust your gut. If something doesn’t look right or feel right, it’s probably not right.

11 Reasons “Pretty Little Liars” Is My New Obsession

The_four_PLL's
{FYI – I’ve only watched the first two seasons, so I am NOT caught up. I repeat, I am NOT caught up. No spoilers please. Unfortunately I already know some, so no more!}

1. The fashion. Who dresses like that in high school? Scratch that. Who doesn’t wish they had dressed like that in high school? Or even post-high school??
2. Every single episode leaves me with another question and wanting more. (Case in point – the number of episodes I binge-watched Saturday, which I won’t tell you, but it was a lot.)
3. The four girls’ friendship through thick and thin (i.e. murders and swim meet championships) and their weekly gossip-fueled sleepovers.
4. Caleb is so bad boy dreamy. Fitz is so book nerd dreamy. Wren is so foreign dreamy. There’s a lot of dreamy.
5. The town square is the same set used as Gilmore Girls. (and we know I’m obsessed with anything GG)
6. Those texts from A are like a box of chocolate, you just never know what you’re gonna get.
7. It’s like Veronica Mars meets Desperate Housewives. Perfect.
8. The music change every time Jenna Marshall walks into a room and the looks all the girls immediately give each other, despite the fact that she isn’t doing anything … except walk into a room.
9. I can get my high school girl-crazy, hair-pulling bathroom fight and my front row seat to a murder investigation all in one place.
10. I don’t understand how/why this is on ABC Family, but that makes it even more scandalous.
11. Hidden lovers, hidden bodies, hidden secrets … what’s not to love??

“Only two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.”

Pop, Fizz, Clink!

This will be one of the first years in recent memory I have not hosted my annual Oscars viewing party. Awards season is one of my favorite things ever and it all leads up to the Academy Awards. A good watch party includes friends, ballots, champagne and red carpet critiquing.

Below are a few photos from my first ever viewing party in high school. The attire was sweats (which back then meant we were all wearing Victoria’s Secret PINK), we traced our hands on a fake red carpet and we drank sparkling cider.

228361_1007736826697_3421_nLast year I rented out the theater at our apartment complex and had a special cake made just for the event. You can see photos and read my post here. Unfortunately this year I decided not to host an event. As it turned out, mother nature affirmed my decision, as we’re currently in a thunder-sleet-pocalypse and I’m not sure how many people would have been able to attend anyway.

While of course I’ll still be watching (ballot and champagne in hand) I wanted to share some fun viewing party ideas I’ve seen around the web.

Enjoy your evening with the stars! xo xo

Oscar Noms Reviews: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

This snowy weather (again!) makes me want to stay in all day and watch movies. Alas, that is not an option, but I wish it were. I could sit and watch movies for days on end. If made correctly, they’re so beautiful and give you a peek into another world, sometimes so different from you that you could have never imagined on your own.

With the Academy Awards less than a month away, I’m on a mission to see as many nominated movies as I can. You can see the full list of nominations here. While I still have a few to go, below are reviews of the movies I’ve seen lately. As I always say, take reviews with a grain of salt. If you want to see something, go see it. No matter what anyone says.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

Wolf of Wall Street: B+
Here’s the short of it – the acting was phenomenal, but everything else was excessive. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill absolutely deserve an award for their work, but it was overdone with sex and drugs. I understand why Martin Scorsese did what he did, but I just don’t agree with it. It also could have easily been cut by an hour at least.

american-hustle

American Hustle: A-
You want to talk about beauty, this was a beautiful film. The clothes, the music, the hair, the music – it was all absolutely perfect for the era. (I was born in the wrong decade!!) This acting was also top-notch. Every single performance was terrific, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale and of course, my love, Jennifer Lawrence.
Gravity-2

Gravity: A+
I can’t remember when I’ve enjoyed a film so much. Scratch that – enjoyed and been on the edge of my seat so much. The entire film was just breathtaking and Sandra Bullock was perfect. George Clooney was good for some eye-candy and comic relief (per usual). Alfonso Cuaron needs to win Best Director.

HER

Her: A-
I give this one a minus simply because parts of it were just too odd. While we are in the day and age where this could legitimately happen, we’re not quite ready to embrace it. That being said, the film was wonderfully made, retro and modern at the same time. Scarlett Johansson was brilliant. She made you feel and believe simply by her voice. That’s true talent right there.

blue jasmine

Blue Jasmine: B+
The story was interesting enough, but as a whole it just wasn’t quite there. The movie’s one redeeming quality was Cate Blanchett, who seems to shine in any role she plays. However, when you don’t have the supporting actors and the plot to hold you up, there’s only so much you can do.

august-osage-county-trailer-05102013-094815

August: Osage County: C+
This movie was just sad. And I mean that in several ways. Sad as in super depressing and sad as in, I was really looking forward to this movie and it did not live up to expectations. Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts were INCREDIBLE. Streep’s monologues were remarkable and reminiscent of a stage play, but the story was just too depressing to justify the performances.

On the top of the list to watch before March 2: Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska, 12 Years a Slave, Frozen

What do you think of the Oscar nominations?

favorites, round 3.

Things I love that I want to share with you, so you can love them too.

1. Beyonce – Queen Bey did it again. This album is phenomenal. I can’t stop listening to it, and I have a new favorite song every day. Current favorites: Partition, XO and Drunk in Love.

2. Chapstick Hydration Lock – I got this new chapstick in my birchbox a few months ago. (Another one of my favorite things.) I’m already a huge chapstick person, but this has just fueled my obsession. It’s so soft and creamy and vanilla-y. It’s amazing.

3. Macarons – I’d had macarons once before and wasn’t a fan. Then, my friend Mollie starting making them and they are out of this world. She might start selling them soon, in which case you can definitely expect a blog post about it so you can buy some!

4. Leopard Scarf from Nordstrom – This scarf has probably been my one favorite wardrobe piece for fall and winter. It’s cute and trendy and leopard is always versatile. Infinity scarves in general are my current fave!

5. Moscow Mule – This drink is amaaazing. Who would have known I’d like Ginger Beer?? It also doesn’t hurt that it’s served in an adorable copper mug. #love

6. Candy Crush – The first step is admitting you have a problem … I’m addicted to Candy Crush! It seems so ridiculous, but it’s so fun. (Until you get stuck on a level for weeks.)

2013: My Top 5 Movies, TV Shows + Books

I love reading end of year lists. I love seeing the popular opinion on top movies, books, fashion, etc. and how it compares with what I think. Last year I shared my top 10 movies of 2012. I planned to do my top 10 movies of 2013, but as I was looking back I honestly couldn’t find 10 movies that I would want on my list. (yikes!) So I decided to shorten it and add a few of my other tops from this year as well.

Enjoy! Let me know what your favorites were this year!
xo xo

M O V I E S

5. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Catching Fire was my favorite book of the series, so they had a lot to live up to, and they did. 10 times better than the first movie and of course Jennifer Lawrence is flawless.

4. Mud
Skeptical at first going into this movie since I didn’t know a thing about it, I walked out in awe at how much I enjoyed it. Maybe because I can semi-relate to the rural Arkansas lifestyle or because Matthew McConaughey had his best performance I’ve seen. Either way, you need to see it.

spectacular-now

3. The Spectacular Now
This is the best indie movie since Garden State. It’s beautiful, it’s touching, it’s heart-wrenching. You will fall in love with Shailene Woodley and newcomer Miles Teller and reminisce about your first love.

2. Rush
What a RUSH! Bad pun, I know, but I absolutely loved this movie. It made something I wasn’t interested in (racing) very interesting and you were hooked until the last second.

1. Gravity
There literally are no words that can describe this movie. I didn’t think I was breathing the entire movie. Even after the movie I was unsure. Outstanding.

(Note: I’m still dying to see the following – The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Wolf of Wall St., Inside Llewelyn Davis, Dallas Buyers Club, Saving Mr. Banks)

T E L E V I S I O N  S H O W S

5. Parks and Recreation
Somehow I’ve gone several years without seeing this show and I’m kicking myself for it. However, binge-watching this over the summer might have been more fun. I love Tom Haverford … and Leslie Knope … and Andy Dwyer … and Ron Swanson … I love them all!

house_of_cards
4. House of Cards
The second season starts streaming on Netflix Feb. 14. No lie, all I want for Valentine’s Day is just to make dinner and binge-watch it with Husband. That’s saying something!!

3. The Walking Dead
Yes, this is a great show, but maybe I’ve loved it this year more because we’ve started watching it every Sunday night with a group of friends and that makes everything better. (Husband will definitely be mad at me for not putting this first … but I just adore Mindy Lahiri and Olivia Pope more than zombies!)

2. The Mindy Project
This has by far been the best sitcom of the year. The first season was shaky, but this season has been hilarious. The addition of Peter and Cliff to the series has been brilliant.

1. Scandal
Somehow this show just keeps getting better and better and better. I never know what to expect each episode, except for glamorous Miss Pope and her big glass of vino. #Olitz4Eva

B O O K S

5. Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg
Practical, honest and smart, this book opened my eyes and gave me the power and perspective I needed to continue in my life and career.

4. The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer
A grown-up version of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, this was an easy book to read, but with more depth and wit than you’d expect.

3. 7 – An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker
This book has changed the way I think about everything. Read it and challenge yourself. Learn about my challenge here.

2. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Intrigue, suspense, love, drama and it’s currently in works to be a movie starring Ben Affleck. I could not put this book down.

mindy kaling
1. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? And Other Concerns by Mindy Kaling
I love Mindy Kaling. I love her writing style. I love her humor. I love her personality. Enough said. (Have I said how much I love her?)

A Griswold Charlie Brown Christmas Rap

Thanksgiving is over and I’ve officially moved on to Christmas. I don’t know what it is about this year, but I’m really getting in to the Christmas spirit. I turn the tree lights on the second I get home, and I’ve been listening to Christmas music more than usual, dancing and singing in the kitchen last night as I was preparing dinner. So I’m going to do a series of holidays posts over the next few weeks – holiday decor, gift guide, fashion, party tips, etc.

But first, I want to make sure all of YOU are in the Christmas spirit. Below are some of my top favorite moments from Christmas movies and TV episodes over the years. If you’re not in the spirit after this, you might just be the Grinch!

10 Reasons “The O.C.” Was The Best Teen Drama Ever on TV

5b3ff7c743197ec311a8fc406850a948

After the show’s 10th anniversary a few months ago and after reading this Buzzfeed, I started reminiscing about my freshman year when I binge-watched the four seasons of The O.C. I immediately became obsessed. Coincidentally, I spent the following summer in California and visited Orange County for the first time. Since then, The O.C. has been one of my favorite shows of all time.

Just recently I started re-watching the series from season 1 and was reminded all over again why I LOVE the show. Below are 10 reasons The O.C. was the best teen drama ever on TV.

9935211c5a22dce3f674fb8c2949317e

1. Seth and Summer – This has to be number one in every list. They are the perfect couple. Their relationship taught me a lot, namely that there’s so much more to a person than looks and it’s okay to have your own passions and go your own way. If you’re meant to be together, it will happen when it’s suppose to. Just recently, a friend told me and my husband we reminded him of Seth and Summer. #biggestcomplimentever

2. The O.C. Mix soundtracks and most importantly, the iconic theme song by Phantom Planet. I’m almost positive this is when indie music became mainstream (Death Cab, Spoon, Rooney, Imogen Heap – I could go on). Watch these 21 Most Important Music Moments From The O.C. and you will be transported back to the show.

253084_1245085608938_full3. Chrismukkah – Christmas + Hanukkah, the perfect Cohen holiday
4. Remember when Marissa’s mom slept with her ex-boyfriend, then married her current boyfriend’s kinda grandfather? It doesn’t get more scandalous than that.
5. Every season finale made me cry. That’s a pretty darn good show.

Ryan-Seth-Kirsten-Sandy-seth-and-ryan-2167236-1555-10396. Sandy Cohen is literally the perfect father figure on TV
7. The O.C. is the most beautiful, perfect place to live – if you have a trust fund, a dysfunctional family and a beach house
8. Things the show made cool: sailing, bagels and schmear, indie bands, comic books, being an outcast, white muscle shirts, plastic horses as best friends – we love you Captain Oats and Princess Sparkles!

10. Seth Cohen, a walking one-liner who spoke fast and furiously, doling out pop culture references and witticisms faster than Ryan could throw a punch. (I did not write that, but it was too perfect not to share!)

Sundays are DEAD to me.

IMG_1097

Last night was the premiere of one of our favorite TV Show – The Walking Dead. Around this time last year at the start of the season, I wrote a post How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse. There’s some good tips in there you definitely need to read, because if you ask my husband the apocalypse is a very viable option.

To commemorate the occasion, we decided to host a small get together with some other zombie lovers. We had eyeball cupcakes, gummy body parts and even a 15-question trivia that I facilitated, complete with a zombie-themed prize. (Sample question: In season 3, which character kills a walker using a car trunk door?)

We screamed, we held our breath, we covered our eyes in disgust – it was definitely a successful premiere. And at the end of it all, we zombie-fied ourselves. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Hope your Sunday evening was just as scary! xo

10 Things I Missed Out On in College by Not Going Greek

Currently our summer shows include Parks & Rec and Game of Thrones, but before that there was Greek. Greek follows a college freshman as he decides to go from geek to Greek, much to the dismay of his popular sister in a sorority. It’s funny, it’s heart-warming and it makes you very nostalgic for your college days.

While I wasn’t in a sorority, I learned from the show several things I missed out on by not being in the greek system, for better or for worse.

Mixtape: KC Memorial Day Weekend ’13

Mix-tape2

Confession: I love mixtapes. If you make me a mixtape, I’ll love you forever. There’s something so special about them. All the mixtapes I’ve made or that have been given to me reflect a moment in time. The songs remind me of a specific person, place or event. I can go back and listen to them and remember the smallest details about that time in my life.

Over the years I’ve most commonly made mixtapes for road trips. Among my collection I have OKC, Tulsa, Green Forest, N. Dakota, Spring Break + many more. When I was younger I even used to write out all the songs on a piece of paper in order with title and artist. I still have the CD and list for Cozumel 2003. If only you knew what was on that CD…

In the spirit of old mixtapes, Husband and I are making one for our trip to Kansas City this weekend. We’re headed up for a little weekend getaway to celebrate our 2nd anniversary. Since we have very different taste in music it will be an interesting compilation, but will hopefully keep both of us musically satisfied for the trip.

Enjoy a peek at our mixtape and let me know what songs would be on yours. Happy long weekend! xo

1. Next to Me, Emeli Sande
2. You and I, Local Natives
3. Shake It Out, Florence + The Machine
4. I Should Live in Salt, The National
5. Today Was a Fairtytale, Taylor Swift
6. Humiliation, The National
7. West Coast, Coconut Records
8. This Is The Last Time, The National
9. Stay, Rihanna
10. Demons, The National
11. I Knew You Were Trouble, Taylor Swift
12. Sea of Love, The National
13. Freaks & Geeks, Childish Gambino
14. Pink Rabbits, The National
15. Breakers, Local Natives
16. Graceless, The National
17. Little Talks, Of Monsters and Men

P.S. I also purchased The Great Gatsby soundtrack for the trip, which is supposed to be AMAZING. It’s produced by Jay-Z, so that’s a pretty good start.

Sometimes you just need to cry, eat ice cream and get over it. And watch Big Bang Theory.

life lately

So I’m breaking my streak of posting life lately every two weeks, as I just posted one last week. I have good reason, but I’ll get to that a little later. First, here’s a little bit of my life lately…

I’ll be going off the blogging radar for a few weeks. Well, really, probably the everything radar unless I work with you or have specific plans for you. We’re starting a media fast Sunday. (I’m terrified) I’ll be blogging more about that tomorrow. But for now, it’s time for a House of Cards binge before it all begins.

10 Facts You Should Know About The Oscars

One of my favorite times of the year is red carpet season. I love to see who takes home the big awards (including Best Dressed of course!)

I’ll be back tomorrow with my Oscar party recap, but until then, happy Sunday and enjoy!

Oscar Statues on display at the Time War

1. Only once in 80 years has a film (Driving Miss Daisy) won Best Picture without getting nominated for Best Director.

2. Amour is only the 9th foreign language film ever nominated for Best Picture.

3. Silver Linings Playbook got four acting nominations, the first time in more than 30 years that’s happened and only the 14th film to ever get all four nominations. No film has ever won all four acting awards. A Streetcar Named Desire won three of its four nominations back in the 1951 race, the only film in history to do so.

4. No film has won Best Picture in the last 30+ years without a Film Editing nomination.

5. In the past 25 years, only three films have won Best Picture without being nominated for any acting awards.

6. Only two Best Picture winners from 2000 onward had productions budgets exceeding $100 million.

7. This year in the Best Actress category includes the youngest person ever to be nominated (Quvenzhane Wallis, 9) and the oldest person (Emmanuelle Riva, 86) ever to be nominated.

8. The most nominated films in Oscar history are Titanic and All About Eve with 14 noms each.

9. The only sequel to have won Best Picture is The Godfather: Part II.

10. Meryl Streep has had the most Best Actress nominations (14) but Katharine Hepburn holds the title for winning the most in the category (4).

Pop Candy {Destiny’s Child Reunion, Blue Ivy’s First Birthday, Kimye Baby Bump}

I wrote my first Pop Candy post this summer {Pre-Weekend Pop Candy} sharing the latest pop culture and entertainment news I’ve been enjoying lately. So I thought it was time to re-visit. What IS going on in the world of celebs these days??

Destiny’s Child to release new song Nuclear + new album with past recordings, oh my GOSH how exciting. This song better live up to some oldies like Survivor and Bootylicious. But wait, there’s more – HOT off the press: Destiny’s Child will reunite at Super Bowl halftime. This is almost as exciting as the Spice Girls reunion at the Olympics. {Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams}

Beyonce And Jay-Z Vacation In The Mediterranean Sea

Speaking of Beyonce, her little one turned 1 year old a few days ago! How cute is this pic with daddy and Blue Ivy?! Fun fact: Jay-Z rents a luxurious basement suite at the Barclays Center for $1 million/year so they can watch the Brooklyn Nets without worrying about little Blue. {Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter}

IFP's 22nd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards - Red Carpet

Oscar nominations were announced yesterday, and I’m THRILLED to report Quvenzhane Wallis as the youngest Oscar nominee ever! The 9-year-old was nominated for Best Actress in Beasts of a Southern Wild, as I predicted in my post {Top 10 Movies of 2012} a few weeks ago … {Quvenzhane Wallis}

Speaking of youngins, thank GOODNESS T-Swift is over this 18-year-old punk. Supposedly she’s already in the recording studio writing about it. Funny tweet I saw for a song name: “You’re Just Not My Style.” {Taylor Swift, Harry Styles}
